A lot of folks will talk about sustainability as a +1. They see it as an added benefit to a product or project. For example, you might hear people say “That’s a great design project, and its green as well.” In this quote “green” is a bonus or an added benefit, but the priority is still focused on “great design”. Given our responsibility as designers to the health and welfare of society, I propose that we change the equation. Let’s make sustainability the priority for the new year and make great design the +1.
